27 Jan 1998"Winners: Heidi Alexander and Nathan Richmond"

  • Swim: 750 metre

  • Run: 4 kilometre

A gusty northerly wind made what could have been an easy going 750 metre swim into a real chore for competitors in this race as they cut through the choppy water. After two races featuring the long one kilometre swim and just a three kilometre run, those with a penchant for pounding the pavement were looking forward to getting out of their wetsuits faster in Race #5 and embarking on the 4 kilometre run.

Nikki Tanner was the first woman out of the water after the vigorous swim and she was closely followed by Marisa Pentecost. Heidi Alexander was a minute down behind setting out on the run, but being the strong runner that she is, she quickly made up for lost time and came through for the win.  Marisa Pentecost had her best finish of the season with a second holding out Sue Clark and Nicola de Lautour.

Brent Foster lead John Munro and Nathan Richmond from the water but again it was Nathan who ruled the run passing Brent about l kilometre into the run along Tamaki Drive.  Brent says his legs just didn’t have the power he needed.  “I thought it might be a tactical race this time, but it ended up that my legs just weren’t quick enough.”
