Race #8 in the NutraSport Stroke & Stride Series was also the 1994 New Zealand Swimrun Championships
The final race of the NutraSport Stroke & Stride Series attracted a quality field of competitors including a large number of overseas’ athletes. The women’s field was started 10 minutes ahead of the men and Louise Soper and Marisa Pentecost had a 2 minute lead over the other women at the start of the run. Louise held the lead until the first turnaround at the Mission Bay turn point but then Marisa moved to the front and was never headed over the final stages to take the New Zealand Swimrun Championships title. Sue Clark was in sixth place after the swim and then ran through for second with Anne Buckley from England also showing good leg speed to take third. Heidi Alexander was fourth and Louise Soper held onto fifth position over the blustery 10 kilometre run.
When the men’s field got underway it was again all Brent Foster as he carved out the swim 50 seconds faster than second placed Malcolm McGregor and a further 50 seconds faster than the chasing bunch which included Paul Anderson and Darragh Walshe. On the run Brent didn’t falter holding out a fast finishing Bruce Houghton to win by 27 seconds. Only 5 seconds behind was Chris Andrews with Darragh Walshe holding out Paul Anderson for fourth.
Marisa and Brent’s victories in the final race allowed them to hold their lead in the Series Grand Prix giving them the overall Stroke & Stride Series Championship along with the 1994 New Zealand Swimrun Championship
