Orca New Zealand Swimrun Championships
Orewa Beach New Zealand.
For the first time in it’s nine year history the Swimrun Championships were shifted outside of New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland; to Orewa Beach, one of the countries finest beaches. Orewa Beach is hosting a weeklong festival of sport with this event one of the highlights. With the two mile expanse of golden sands and the warm, clear waters of the Pacific Ocean to utilize, the organisers were able to set a course that highlighted this spectacular setting with the entire run on the sand.
Brent Foster first won this title back in 1994 and had gained a hat trick over the past three years. He opened up a one minute lead on his fellow surf life saving aficionados, Adam Jackson and Ariki Pearson during the 1500 metre swim and then was never threatened as he ran through for his fifth championship title. Ariki Pearson grabbed the silver ahead of the New Zealand marathon champ, Mark Hutchinson who not surprisingly clocked the fastest run split. Adam Jackson held on for fourth ahead of Carl Cairns.
Evelyn Williamson won this title in 1999 while Kirsty Whiting was the champ last season and they were picked to fight it out for the honours in 2001. Heading out onto the six kilometre run they had Miriam Barlow in contact but by runs end it was all Evelyn Williamson as she regained her title in convincing fashion ahead of Kirsty Whiting. Samantha Warriner’s smart run overhauled Miriam Barlow for third while Olivia Haine grabbed fifth place.
