10 Feb 1998"Winners: Fiona Docherty and Nathan Richmond"

  • St Helier's Bay
  • |
  • Swim: 500 metre
  • |
  • Run: 5 kilometre

This is the race that would decide just who is Queen of the 5k.  And the winner is without a doubt Fiona Docherty.  Despite giving a start to most of the other top runners after the 500 metre swim, Fiona absolutely tore the 5 kilometre run course to pieces to record her first ever win in a Stroke & Stride.  Heidi Alexander couldn’t match Fiona’s speed on this occasion and had to settle for second ahead of Sue Clark closely followed by Debbie Tanner and Nicola de Lautour

The men’s field didn’t have Brent Foster to set the pace during the swim, he was busy taking the World Life Saving title from the Australians for the first time ever.  However Will Green was happy to take over the leadership duties during the swim and he towed the pack around the course.  Ominously sitting on Will’s toes was Series leader, Nathan Richmond and he quickly took control out on the run.

Rodney Gordon exited the transition a minute down on the lead but he quickly hit overdrive and scorched through for the fastest run of the day.  This blitzing run got Rodney to within 10 seconds of Nathan at the finish line but that was as close as he was allowed to get.  Nathan again appears to be in total control of his opposition and doing just enough to win.  Chasing these two home was Marc Jenkins taking time out from his holidays to represent Great Britain and show off his talents in the swimrun game.  Vaughan Skiffington and Will Green completed the top five.
